Main
Theater
In 1706
was inaugurated on an important commerce spot the Main Theatre, with a
space to accommodate up to 1600 people. Later, during the Independence
Battle was used as an artillery warehouse. At its reopening, was used to
organize bullfights that seriously damaged it. In 1820 got its current
name and was rebuilt, but in 1902 caught fire after a performance,
losing almost all its colonial structure. Years later, it was rebuilt
and equipped, that is why it's working up to date. At present, the
surrounding area of the Main Theatre, is a pedestrian walkway where is
also the Artist District; here artists and sculptors gather to exhibit
and display their masterpieces. It is a place you must visit in Puebla
sightseeing!

Museo
Nacional del Ferrocarril
This is a treat for railroad buffs. It consists of a large open area
with several train engines (both steam and diesel), baggage cars,
passenger cars, a presidential car, a dining car, Pullman coaches, and a
caboose. You can board and inspect the cars. Even those not interested
in railroads might enjoy seeing the design and details of some of these
-- they sketch in microcosm a bygone era. A small gallery exhibits
railway landscapes.Phone:222/232-4988
Exconvento
de Santa Mónica
After independence, a long political struggle arose
between the national government and the Church. It climaxed in the
Reform Wars of the 1850s, when the government instituted several
anticlerical measures, including the closing of convents. The nuns here
discreetly walled up their doors and kept functioning as a religious
community with the aid of their neighbors and the blind eye of local
officials. They survived with little assistance from the outside as over
the years the convent slowly crumbled around them. Then, in 1934 (during
another time of crisis between the government and the church), a local
official "discovered" them. This history makes for an interesting visit:
displays include the contents of this and two other clandestine convents
confiscated at the same time. These nuns weren't sitting on great
treasures -- most of the paintings are poor examples of their era -- but
you will find a rare set of paintings on velvet that predate Elvis.
Things not to miss are the crypt, the chapel, and the upper and lower
coros (choirs). While you're there, visit the church next door and
pay your respects to the much-revered image of Nuestro Señor de las
Maravillas, alongside the back of the nave, to the left as you
enter.Phone:222/232-0178
Exconvento
de Santa Rosa
Unlike its neighbor, this
former convent near Santa Mónica was unable to postpone confiscation and
served variously as barracks, hospital, and public housing. It is now
the home of the Museo de Arte Popular. Here you can see the
kitchen where mole was invented (for this alone it is worth the
pilgrimage), and afterward the museum guide will take you upstairs to
see displays of the crafts practiced in the state of Puebla. If you
enjoy handicrafts, don't miss this place; it has some rare and beautiful
examples of artisanship. The main door is usually closed; enter through
the public parking lot at 14 Poniente 305
